USS Lexington

Corpus Christi, Texas is a major tourist destination for the southern United States and for visitors from all over the world. Surfing and sailing are two of the most popular draws that prompt operators to abandon their cable cutters for a weekend. However if you're planning a trip to the area, there's one other ocean related attraction that should be on your must-see list: the U.S.S. Lexington. As a former World War II aircraft carrier turned museum ship, it has something interesting for everyone, whether they're a naval enthusiast or not.

Taking a self-guided tour of the Lexington lets you see the secret inside workings of a real aircraft carrier, from the drive pulley that runs the aircraft elevators to the steam catapults that launch planes into the air. You'll also have the chance to see informative displays on the carrier's history and real artifacts from the war years. On your way out you can get a bite to eat on the mess deck or pick up a souvenir at the ship's shop.

With your admission you get a free movie at the Joe Jessel Mega Theater located on board. This three story tall screen (nearly as big as an IMAX) has digital surround sound and can almost make you feel the high temperature tape pulling away as a space shuttle launches or a thunderstorm swoops down on an unsuspecting Texas city. Films shown in this theater are educational documentaries, such as Fighter Pilot: Operation Red Flag, and Lewis and Clark: The Great Journey West.

No experience is more immerse, however, than the Lexington's flight simulator. This state-of-the-art training and entertainment module puts you right in the action with hydraulic movement, video projection, and realistic, responsive flight controls. See how you test weights against your friends in simulated combat missions in the Iraqi desert. The flight simulator is not included in admission. It costs $4 extra.

The museum is open all year round, seven days a week, from 9-5 in the off season and from 9-6 in the high season. Admission is $12.95 for adults but seniors and military personnel get a discount of $2 and children get in for $7.95 (or free if they're under three). If you're planning a visit, be aware that it involves narrow passageways and steep stairs. Pneumatic conveying for the disabled is available, but contact them in advance for more information. You can also contact them to arrange group tours, parties, and youth overnight camps.
